20 for 2025 – The Black Dog: Loud Ambient

Inspired by Mark Rothko, ‘Loud Ambient’ dropped November 18th on Dust Science.

With the untimely death of founding Black Dog member, Ken Downie, this record holds some extra weight, as this Opus is the last sonic artifact from this highly influential producer’s project. Along with Martin and Richard Dust, of the Dust Science label, this configuration of The Black Dog has released some amazing records, and this one is no exception.

The Black Dog stand as foundational pillars of British electronic music. Their status as pioneers of UK techno and IDM is undisputed, having shaped the very landscape with seminal albums like ‘Parallel’, ‘Bytes’, and ‘Spanners’. By reimagining Detroit techno through a distinctively British lens, they forged a unique sonic identity that propelled their growth alongside the genre itself.

Their artistic journey is one of constant exploration. Collaborations, such as those with The Black Sifichi on ‘Genetically Modified’ and with Human on ‘Music for Real Airports’, reveal their breadth. Releases across prestigious labels like Warp Records and Soma, alongside diverse remixes from Björk to the ‘Bullitt’ soundtrack, underscore their vast and varied sound.

Loud Ambient’ is crafted for movement, signaling our spirited return to the dancefloor. We extend the invitation, while bidding a farewell to one of the original architects of Intelligent Dance Music.
